Is your garage a hot mess right now? Are you embarrassed to open your garage door, fearing you'll expose a deep, dark secret? Maybe you’re afraid to open the door that leads from your home to your garage because you know you may not get back inside unscathed. If so, it's about time you get organized!

While we don’t give you step-by-step instructions on how to CLEAN your garage in this post, we do in another. Check out Spring Cleaning Your Garage—It’s Time! In today's article, we offer ideas to help you organize your garage like a pro so you can proudly show off your tidy garage to all your neighbors.

First, Take Inventory

Once your garage is clean and you’ve cleared out all the stuff you don’t need, take inventory of what you still have to get a good idea of how you can divide it up into different sections. Writing out a list may help you. For example, if you have several bikes and lots of sports equipment, you may want to stick it all in the same part of your garage so you know exactly where to find it. Do you have lots of tools? Do you need to use part of your garage for storage? Once you take inventory of everything you have and break your belongings up into groups, you'll need to figure out where to place everything. Next, Map Out Your Space

Now that you know exactly what you have in the garage, you need to come up with a layout. Grab a piece of paper and pencil and draw a diagram, splitting your garage into different zones. Maybe one zone is reserved for your vehicle(s), another is a workspace, and another is sectioned off for lawn equipment. Don't forget to utilize wall and ceiling space as well! Place items you don't use as much farther back in the garage or in places you can't reach as easily. Develop a layout that works well for you based on what you use most and what you need space for.

Lastly, Organize

Now that you’ve developed a layout, start organizing everything into their respective zones. Place like items together in an organized manner. You’ll likely need to buy some storage containers, shelving, racks, or other organizational supplies. Peg boards are handy for hanging tools in the workshop zone. You can hang bicycles, ropes, and extension cords from ceiling hooks to get them off the ground. If you have boxes or plastic containers full of storage, you could organize them on a shelf to free more floor space. Clear plastic containers make good storage containers because you can see exactly what's inside.

Store cleaning supplies and vehicle products in a safe place, perhaps in a cabinet that can be locked so children and pets can’t access them. Figure out what works for you, and get everything organized the way you want it! Peruse the internet and sites like Pinterest for some creative organization ideas!

Once you place everything where you want it, you can label different zones if you like so everyone in the family can keep the garage as organized as possible. Be sure to clearly label storage bins so you can quickly and easily find what you’re looking for at any time.

That’s all there is to it! If you follow these steps, your garage can be clean and organized before you know it.
