If you’re beginning to get spring fever, you may already be in the process of concocting ideas for home improvement projects you'd like to undertake this year. Is a new garage door on the list? Your garage door is a large, prominent feature of your home, and its style and design can make a big impact on its overall appearance. Here are several options you have and factors to keep in mind when choosing materials for your new garage door.
Determine your budget before deciding on a type of garage door. Prices can vary greatly, depending on the material, how much customization is done, and how many additional features you select. Your budget may narrow your options. For example, wooden garage doors can be quite pricey, while basic steel doors can be very affordable. Insulation value can also impact price. The higher the R-value, the more the door will cost. Keep in mind, however, that a more energy efficient garage door can also cut your heating and cooling costs.
Choose a material that fits your lifestyle as well as complements the look of your home. Some doors require regular upkeep, while others require little to no work apart from annual inspection and lubrication (which will help any type of door run more smoothly for longer). Aluminum doors are virtually maintenance free; steel doors only require occasional cleaning; and real wood doors need to be painted or stained every few years. If you love the look of wood but don’t want to deal with the maintenance, consider carriage house steel; it looks like real wood (even up close!) but is stronger and more durable.
Depending on the type of home you have, one material may look better than another. For example, if you have an older, classic home, a modern aluminum door could look out of place. Use a design program, such as the Wayne Dalton Garage Door Design Center, to see which type of door looks best on your home.
Choose a specific panel design and pattern to add character to your door! Flush panels are flat and simple, while raised panels offer depth and distinction, and carriage house panels look more traditional. Recessed and ribbed panels are also available. You can choose whether you want the top row to be straight or arched, whether you want to add windows to let in natural light, and if so, what size, shape, and glass type they should be.
