Before hiring an individual or company to repair your garage door, you need to do your research. Ask the following questions to make sure you hire a trustworthy, professional business to work with. Doing so can save you a lot of time and money.

What does the garage door repair company’s website look like?

Today, most businesses are and should be online. Check to see if the company has a legitimate website, and poke around to see what kinds of services they provide. Well established companies often invest money in a good website.

Is the business licensed and insured?

Make sure the repairperson is properly licensed and fully insured. If he or she is injured on the job, you don’t want to be held financially liable. You can check the Better Business Bureau to ensure the company is licensed, bonded, and insured.

What’s their reputation in your community?

If the business is well known in your community and has a good reputation, it’s a good sign. Make sure the company is legitimate and established in the area, not traveling through selling repair services out of a truck. Ask for recommendations from your neighbors and nearby friends and family.

What do online reviews say?

Look for reviews on the company website, Facebook, Google, Angie’s List, and the Better Business Bureau. If the business has a low rating and terrible reviews, you probably won't want to work with them.

Do they have a physical address?

Search for the business's physical address on Google, and even consider driving by it to get an idea of what type of business you’ll be dealing with. If they have no permanent address and always uses a cell phone to communicate with you, beware.

Does the business belong to a trade association?

Garage door companies who want to be known as professional, trustworthy businesses in their communities will often join organizations like the IDA (International Door Association) and gain IDEA accreditation and certification, showing the public that they’ve met and kept up with high standards in the industry.

Is the company capable and qualified to make the particular repair?

Some companies are well qualified for certain types of repairs or to repair specific types of garage doors but not others. Make sure the repair technician has experience making your specific type of garage door repair. Ask to see examples of past jobs so you know the type and quality of work they’re capable of doing. An experienced repair technician should be proud to show off their work and skills. If they’re hesitant, they probably aren't qualified.

What types of payment do they take?

If the company only accepts cash, this is a red flag. Honest, licensed businesses should accept other forms of payment like check and credit cards. Don’t pay up front, either. Payments should only be made after the job is complete.
